Ingredients
-
1 loaf challah or brioche bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
-
1 cup walnuts, roughly chopped
-
8 large eggs
-
2 cups whole milk
-
1 cup heavy cream
-
1/2 cup pure maple syrup
-
1/4 cup granulated sugar
-
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
-
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
-
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
-
Pinch of salt
-
Optional: powdered sugar for serving
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Arrange the cubed bread evenly in the dish and sprinkle the walnuts on top.
-
In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, maple syrup, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
-
Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread, pressing down gently so the bread absorbs the liquid.
-
Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight for best results.
-
Remove from the refrigerator 30 minutes before baking. Cover with foil and bake for 35 minutes. Remove the foil and bake an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown.
-
Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar and drizzle with maple syrup if desired.
-
Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven at 325°F (165°C) for 10-15 minutes.
Notes
-
Day-old bread works best for absorbing the custard without becoming too soggy.
-
Customize with different nuts or a streusel topping for extra crunch.
-
For a dairy-free version, substitute milk and cream with almond, oat, or coconut alternatives.
-
Gluten-free bread can be used for those with dietary restrictions.
