Description

Start your morning with a cozy, sweet breakfast that combines the rich flavors of brown sugar and maple with the satisfying crunch of toasted pecans. This casserole is perfect for weekend brunches, special family gatherings, or any time you want a comforting and indulgent dish. Its custard-soaked bread base absorbs all the flavors beautifully, creating a tender, flavorful dish that everyone will love.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of thick-cut brioche or challah bread, cubed

  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed

  • ½ cup pure maple syrup

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 1 cup whole milk

  • 1 cup heavy cream

  • 4 large eggs

  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

  • 1 cup chopped pecans, toasted

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

  • Cube the bread and place it evenly in the prepared dish. Optional: lightly toast the bread cubes in the oven for 5–7 minutes for extra texture.

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.

  • In a large bowl, whisk milk, heavy cream, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth. Gradually add the brown sugar and maple mixture, stirring to combine.

  • Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes and gently press down to ensure full absorption.

  • Sprinkle toasted pecans on top and drizzle with melted butter.

  • Bake for 45–55 minutes, until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

  • Let cool for 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm, optionally with extra maple syrup or whipped cream.

Notes

    • Prepare ahead by assembling the casserole the night before and refrigerating. Bake in the morning, adding 5–10 extra minutes if needed.

    • Brioche or challah is ideal, but soft sandwich bread, French bread, or croissants can be used. Adjust soaking time as needed.

    • Substitute pecans with walnuts, almonds, or hazelnuts, lightly toasted for flavor.

    • For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free bread; the texture may differ slightly but remains delicious.

    • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days and reheated gently.
