Ingredients
-
1 loaf of brioche or challah bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
-
8 large eggs
-
2 cups whole milk
-
1 cup heavy cream
-
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
-
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
-
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
-
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
-
1/4 teaspoon salt
-
1 cup chopped pecans
-
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Topping:
-
1/2 cup brown sugar
-
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
-
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
-
1/4 teaspoon salt
-
1/2 cup chopped pecans
-
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
Optional Glaze:
-
1 cup powdered sugar
-
2–3 tablespoons milk
-
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Arrange bread cubes evenly in the dish.
-
In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
-
Pour custard over the bread cubes, pressing gently to ensure all pieces soak up the liquid. Sprinkle chopped pecans over the top and drizzle with melted butter.
-
Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for best results.
-
Prepare the topping by mixing brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, salt, and chopped pecans. Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle evenly over the soaked bread.
-
Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes, until the top is golden and custard is set.
-
Optional glaze: Mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Drizzle over the slightly cooled casserole before serving.
-
Let cool for 5-10 minutes, then slice and serve warm.
Notes

Day-old bread works best to absorb the custard without becoming mushy.
