Ingredients
-
1 loaf thick-cut brioche or challah bread, cubed
-
2 cups whole milk
-
1 cup heavy cream
-
6 large eggs
-
3/4 cup granulated sugar
-
1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
-
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
-
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
-
1/4 teaspoon salt
-
1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
-
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (for drizzling)
-
Optional: powdered sugar or maple syrup for serving
Instructions
-
Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray. Cube the bread into 1-inch pieces and spread evenly in the prepared dish. Sprinkle 1 cup of chocolate chips over the bread, reserving the rest for topping.
-
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
-
Pour the custard mixture evenly over the cubed bread, pressing lightly to help it soak. Sprinkle the remaining chocolate chips on top and drizzle with melted butter. Cover with foil and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight.
-
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 15–20 minutes.
-
Bake covered with foil for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 20–25 minutes until the top is golden brown and slightly crisp. A knife inserted should come out clean but moist.
-
Let the casserole cool 5–10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm with powdered sugar, extra chocolate chips, or maple syrup if desired.
Notes
-
Best if soaked overnight for maximum flavor and gooey texture.
-
Brioche or challah works best for soft, buttery bread, but French bread can be used.
-
Customize with nuts, berries, or coconut for added flavor.
-
Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
