Easy to make ahead and bake, it’s a stress-free way to serve a crowd while filling your kitchen with the comforting aroma of cinnamon and baked bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf cinnamon swirl bread (12–16 slices)

  • 6 large eggs

  • 2 cups whole milk

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed

  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • Pinch of salt

Topping:

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

  • Optional: 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts

For Serving:

  • Maple syrup

  • Powdered sugar (optional)

  • Fresh berries (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.

  • Remove crusts from the bread if desired, cut into 1-inch cubes, and place in the prepared dish.

  • In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.

  • Pour custard evenly over the bread cubes, pressing gently so all bread absorbs it. Let sit 10–15 minutes.

  • In a small bowl, combine brown sugar and cinnamon for the topping, stir in melted butter, and mix until crumbly. Add nuts if using.

  • Sprinkle the topping evenly over the soaked bread.

  • Cover casserole loosely with foil and bake 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake 20–25 minutes more until golden and custard is set.

  • Allow casserole to cool 5–10 minutes before serving. Serve with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or berries.

Notes

  • Slightly stale bread works best to absorb custard without becoming soggy.

  • Make-ahead option: assemble and refrigerate overnight, then bake in the morning.

  • Add nuts, chocolate chips, or fruit for extra flavor.

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge up to 3–4 days; reheat in oven or microwave.
