Ingredients
-
1 loaf of thick-cut bread (such as brioche or challah), cubed
-
8 large eggs
-
2 cups whole milk
-
1/2 cup heavy cream
-
1/2 cup pure maple syrup, plus extra for drizzling
-
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
-
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
-
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
-
1/4 teaspoon salt
-
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
-
Optional toppings: powdered sugar, fresh berries, chopped nuts
Instructions
-
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
-
Cut the bread into roughly 1-inch cubes. Slightly stale bread works best for absorption.
-
In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
-
Spread the cubed bread evenly in the prepared baking dish. Pour the custard mixture over the bread, pressing down gently to ensure all pieces are coated.
-
Let the casserole soak for at least 15 minutes, or cover and refrigerate for up to 8 hours for deeper flavor.
-
Drizzle melted butter evenly over the soaked bread.
-
Bake for 45–50 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the custard is set. A knife inserted in the center should come out clean.
-
Allow to cool slightly before serving. Top with powdered sugar, fresh berries, chopped nuts, and additional maple syrup if desired.
Notes
-
Slightly stale bread absorbs custard best without becoming soggy.
-
Make ahead by assembling the night before and refrigerating overnight.
-
Customize toppings according to taste with fruit, nuts, or extra maple syrup.
