It’s easy to prepare ahead, feeds a crowd, and fills the kitchen with irresistible aromas. Inspired by slow weekend mornings and family gatherings, this casserole turns a simple breakfast into a special occasion that everyone will love.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of thick, day-old brioche or challah bread, cut into 1-inch cubes

  • 6 large eggs

  • 2 cups whole milk

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • Optional: powdered sugar for dusting, maple syrup for serving

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

  • Cube the bread into 1-inch pieces and place evenly in the prepared baking dish.

  • In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt. Pour over the bread cubes, pressing gently to ensure all pieces are soaked.

  • Let the bread soak for at least 15 minutes, or cover and refrigerate overnight for a richer custard.

  • In a small bowl, mix sliced almonds, brown sugar, melted butter, and cinnamon for the topping. Sprinkle evenly over the soaked bread.

  • Bake for 45–55 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.

  • Allow the casserole to cool for 10–15 minutes before slicing.

  • Dust with powdered sugar and serve with maple syrup if desired.

Notes

Use day-old bread for best results. Soaking overnight enhances flavor. Optional toppings like powdered sugar, maple syrup, or fresh fruit elevate the dish.
